Medication Tapering
Maybe you've been on your antidepressant for years and you've been wondering: Is it time?
Maybe the side effects have become louder than the symptoms that led you to medication in the first place.
Maybe you've been quietly reducing your dose on your own and it's not going well.
Maybe your previous provider dismissed your desire to explore alternatives.
You're not alone. And you're not wrong for asking the question.Ready to Explore Life Beyond Your Prescription? Let's Do It Safely. Together.
Medication Tapering Support
The Problem
Millions of women want to explore tapering off psychiatric medication but most don't have a provider who knows how to do it safely, slowly, and with a solid alternative plan in place. The result?
- Women who quit cold turkey and suffer devastating withdrawal effects
- Women who taper too fast and relapse
- Women who are told "you'll need this forever" without ever being offered an alternative path
- Women who feel stuck between a medication they no longer want and a void with nothing to replace it
The Solution: Supervised Tapering with a Botanical Bridge
At The Integrative Mental Wellness & ReLeaf Clinic, I offer medically supervised, individualized medication tapering guided by a provider who is both a psychiatric prescriber and a nurse herbalist.
Here's what makes this different:
- I prescribe the medication AND the herbs. I understand both pharmacologies and can manage the full picture.
- I don't just remove your medication. I replace it. Before we reduce a single milligram, we build your botanical foundation so your brain and body have support throughout the transition.
- I go at YOUR pace. There is no universal timeline. Your taper is guided by your symptoms, your life circumstances, and your readiness, not a calendar.
- I monitor you closely. Frequent visits, validated symptom tracking, and an open line of communication throughout.
- I'm honest. If tapering isn't going well, I'll tell you. We can pause, slow down, or change course. Staying on medication is never a failure, it's a valid, respected choice.
What the Tapering Process Looks Like
Phase 1: Evaluate & Prepare (2–4 weeks)
- Comprehensive review of your medication history, current regimen, and goals
- Assessment of readiness and risk factors for discontinuation difficulty
- Introduction of your individualized herbal protocol (botanical bridge)
- Culinary medicine foundations ( anti-inflammatory nutrition, gut support)
- Baseline symptom measures
Phase 2: Gradual Taper (Timeline varies; typically 2–9 months)
- Slow, stepwise dose reductions (10–25% at a time)
- Regular monitoring visits (every 1–4 weeks depending on phase)
- Symptom tracking with validated tools
- Herbal protocol adjustments as needed
- Optional: Culinary art therapy group for community support during transition
Phase 3: Post-Taper Stabilization (2–3 months)
- Continued monitoring after full discontinuation
- Herbal regimen maintenance
- Lifestyle and nutritional optimization
- Relapse prevention planning
Medications I Support Tapering From
- SSRIs (sertraline, escitalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, citalopram, fluvoxamine)
- SNRIs (venlafaxine, duloxetine, desvenlafaxine)
- Benzodiazepines (clonazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, diazepam) with extreme caution and extended timelines
- Sleep medications (trazodone, zolpidem, eszopiclone)
- Buspirone
- Atypical antipsychotics used for mood/anxiety augmentation (quetiapine, aripiprazole) case-by-case basis
- Other psychiatric medications - please inquire
Who This Is For
- Women who are stable on their current medication and want to explore herbal alternatives
- Women experiencing intolerable side effects from psychiatric medication
- Women who feel "ready" to try a different path but want to do it safely
- Women who have attempted tapering on their own and struggled
- Women who were never offered a plan for eventually coming off medication
Who This Is NOT For
- Women currently in psychiatric crisis or actively suicidal. Stabilization must come first
- Women with conditions that require ongoing pharmaceutical management (e.g., bipolar I disorder, psychotic disorders) - though medication optimization and herbal adjunct support may be appropriate
- Women seeking to taper without adequate follow-up and monitoring. This must be a supervised process
